The pool was the good part of the garden. The deck around it was the part nobody looked at.
The concrete itself was in decent condition, which meant there was no case for tearing it out. What it needed was a reason to be looked at, and a surface that behaved properly when it was wet and barefoot.
What we did
We engraved the deck into large panels that follow the curve of the pool rather than cutting straight lines across it, then set a compass rose into the widest part of the surround where there was room to see it whole. The colour was built up in layers of stain, warm terracotta and stone against a darker border, so the pattern reads from the house as well as from underfoot.
The finish
Slip-resistant material went in with the sealer, which is standard on every pool deck we do. The result is cooler underfoot than the dark coping, textured enough to be safe when it is wet, and sealed against pool chemicals and Tennessee summers.
