Interior floors cut to look like tile, without the tile

Every tiled floor eventually becomes a grout problem.

The pattern is what people want. The joints are what they end up cleaning. Engraving lets us give a slab the geometry of a tiled floor while leaving it as one continuous, sealed surface.

What we did

We set out the tile grid on the existing concrete and adjusted it to the room so the cuts landed sensibly at the walls instead of finishing on a sliver. The lines were engraved shallow and wide, so they read as joints from standing height, then the field and the border were stained in different tones to separate them.

The advantage

Nothing can lift, crack along a joint or come away at an edge, because there are no separate pieces. The floor is sealed as one surface, and the pattern can be extended into an adjoining room later without matching a discontinued tile.
